Restoring your heart after heartbreak, divorce or painful separation is incredibly hard. 

In fact, the experience of  heartbreak  can be so intense that some of the latest research suggests it feels the same as a physical pain.

In one study, people showed similar brain activity when they viewed a photo of a former love to when they felt extreme heat on their arm. It appears that heartbreak really can hurt the human body.

After going through the initial shock of a heartbreak, one of the biggest challenges is that it creates long-term fear. Fear of putting yourself out there when you are trying to date. Or, when you are in a relationship, fear of fully opening up to your partner, because you don’t want to get wounded again. 

In our society, we are given very few tools for regular heart restoration. We don’t know how to grieve fully. We don’t know how to put our precious hearts back together after a painful divorce or even a bad argument with our partner. 

In my own marriage, I was entrapped in this space for a very long time. Because I was abused as a child, I developed a deep psychological protection mechanism: Men are not safe. When my husband would trigger me, or activate a core wound inside of me, I would lash out, disengage, or literally go bananas. 

It was not until I started to heal my broken heart – from past lovers, from every day criticism, from my own abuse – that I was able to process deep layers of emotional pain, allowing for full heart restoration and deep feelings of safety around love, intimacy, and connection.
